7 tiers · one routeWhy We March: The Dream, The Legacy & 30+ Years of Houston Unity
From Dr. King’s historic addresses to the heart of Midtown Houston, our annual parade is more than a tradition. It is a living, breathing commitment to unity, opportunity, and brotherhood for every generation.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood before thousands at the Sam Houston Coliseum in October 1967, he challenged the city of Houston to lead with conscience, economic justice, and peaceful conviction.
In 1994, Charles Stamps transformed that timeless challenge into a vibrant reality by founding the MLK Grande Parade in Midtown Houston. Today, it has grown into one of North America's premier civil rights commemorations — bringing together award-winning high school bands, historic floats, civic leaders, and families across all walks of life.
We don't merely march to look back. We march to lift up our youth, strengthen our neighborhoods, and illuminate the path forward together.
